Coincidences

During our time in the hospital, we encountered many “coincidences.”

From the initial discovery of Aidan’s heart issue by an amazing nurse to insurance issues resolving themselves, there are almost too many “coincidences” to count.

We keep using quotations around the word coincidences because we don’t believe they are random occurrences. Life doesn’t work that way, in our experience. We wholeheartedly believe God’s hand of protection was upon us throughout the entire experience. There is no other explanation for the things we experienced.

Exactly What We Needed, When We Needed it

It all starts with the amazing nurse who was on duty the night Aidan was born. Nobody else suspected anything was wrong with him, but she acted on her impulse and called in a team of specialists to examine Aidan after she decided that his color was off. He was losing oxygen as time progressed and was rushed to the NICU before it was too late.

Several days later when we were in the middle of Aidan’s treatment at Phoenix Children’s hospital, a letter was waiting for us in the mailbox one night. This particular evening we felt depleted. Aidan’s oxygen numbers weren’t improving on their own and we were playing the wait-and-see game after his initial procedure to fix the issue.

The letter was from the nurse who spotted his issue and got him the help he needed in time.

I (Andrew) am not a crier, but it was impossible to avoid tearing up as I read the card to Amy. Her words of empathy and encouragement were exactly what we needed that evening. I refuse to believe that was a coincident.

A couple days later, my Mom was parking her vehicle at the hospital when a security guard randomly asked her how her day was going. She explained Aidan’s situation and that there were a lot of people praying for him. The security guard looked her in the eye and told her that he would be praying for Aidan as well when he went home that night.

Almost every other day I would run into the hospital chaplain who would remind me he was praying for Aidan.

One day I listened to the story of Jesus healing Jairus’ daughter and it really resonated with me. It’s a beautiful story in Mark about believing instead of succumbing to fear. It happened to be the exact same story Amy read Aidan that day in the Jesus Storybook Bible. She was reading the Bible to him from start to finish and it was “coincidentally” time to read that particular story. Even though it’s a kid’s version of the Bible, it is still a pretty big book!

Jesus in Disguise

Singer-songwriter Brandon Heath sings of random occurrences that don’t seem to make sense, but could very well be God’s hand of blessing in the aptly-titled song, Jesus in Disguise. Throughout this entire experience, there are too many instances of God looking out for us to mention.

People all over the world were praying for us and we believe these prayers were answered on a daily basis. These were no coincidences.
